Fly Tying Vices

Fly fishing is one of the best hobbies you can have. Fly fishing is arguably the highest and most distinguished art in angling. The graceful movements that are involved in throwing an artificial fly are a wonder to watch. If you’re a beginner then you might be put off by what you hear from other people, but fly fishing is not a very difficult sport to get into. Just like anything else, the more you practice the better you will become at it. It is highly recommended for those that are starting their journey into this wonderful sport take initial lessons from an expert fly-fisher. This is because relying on someone who is not very skilled can set you back as they will no doubt teach you bad habits.

Regardless whether you’re just starting out in fly fishing or whether you’ve been enjoying the many benefits offered by this sport for many years, you will no doubt have come across fly tying. Having the ability to tie your own flies is one of the greatest skills a fly fisher can achieve. There are so many benefits to tying your own flies including saving money and the thrill of fishing with flies made by your own hands.

If you regularly go fishing then you know that the cost of flies can add up. Included in this is the cost of petrol as you visit your local tackle shop. This is one of the many reasons people get into fly tying. With the skill to make your own flies, all you need is the materials which are cheap and in no time you will be tying your favourite patterns or even coming up with your own to suit the insect population of where you’re fishing. Nothing comes to the feeling of landing a fish after studying the environment, choosing the most appropriate materials, tying the fly yourself.

As you would expect from a top craft such as fly-tying there are many tools designed to make your life easier. There are some tools that you must have and some tools that are nice to have but are not necessary. Fly tying vices come in the category of must have tools.

A fly tying vice is designed to hold your hook firmly while you get on with the task of tying. You can certainly tie flies without a vice and there are some tiers who do it with their hands but it is usually with some difficulty and the results are never as good as ones tied with the aid of a vice.

There are many types of vices available on the market for sale and they pretty much do the same thing. Your choice will be determined by many factors including how much you have to spend. When setting a budget for a fly tying vice, you should bear in mind that you get what you pay for. This does not mean you should go out and purchase the most expensive vice on the market but it means you should buy the best you can afford. Investing in a cheap vice will result in frustration on your part as the vice fails to hold your hooks securely, defeating the purpose of using a vice in the first place.

If you are an expert fly tyer then look into buying a rotary vice. For those just getting started stationary vices are fine. A fly tying rotary vice allows a tyer to see and work on every side of the fly without removing it from the vice. Rotary vices are also ideal when you want to tie saltwater flies that have epoxy bodies as it allows you to rotate the fly and get a smooth shaped body.

Other fly tying tools include scissors, bobbins, hackle pliers and bodkins. By investing in quality tools and practicing hard you will make superior flies. Can you imagine being so good at tying flies that you can roll up your own flies no matter where you are, even at the side of a river, when you find the patterns you have with you are not working as they are not suitable to the surroundings.
