Fly fishing is a fantastic sport to get involved in. People of all ages can take part in it while at the same time relaxing and enjoying themselves. A wonderful hobby that has developed out of fly fishing is fly tying. Fly tying allows those people that are capable to make their own flies. Creating your own flies allows you to get really creative. You can choose to replicate the well known fly patterns that are around or you can even make your own. Many of the famous fly patterns we have today are as a result of people experimenting with their own ties.

Tying your own flies has many benefits including saving you money and just being sheer fun. You can also increase your chances of catching a fish by experimenting and using the correct fly for the water you are fishing in.

There are many tools available to make your job easier when you want to start tying your own flies. Some are essential and others are just optional. It is not necessary to have every tool for creating effective well-tied fly patterns but whatever tools you decide to invest in make sure it will make your task easier.

Amongst the essentials of fly tying tools is the vice. This is a tool that is valuable for both the beginner and the expert. A fly tying vice is designed to keep your hook in place while you dress it up. It is possible to use your hands but an especially designed vice makes it so much easier. This is more so for really small hooks. If you’re just starting in fly tying you can get away with using a cheap stationary vice but more experienced tiers prefer rotary vices.

With rotary vices you are able to see the whole fly from every angle very easily without taking it off the vice. There are many different types of vises on sale and which one you choose is down to your personal preference. The best way to find out if you are going to like a model is by testing it out at the shop or borrowing a friends for a couple of days.

Scissors is another must have tool. It is the tool you will use the most often so you should try to get a high quality one. It of course needs to be sharp but it should also be comfortable on your fingers. Different models are sized differently so it is best to try them before you buy it. Ideally you should have a second pair of fly tying scissors. One pair for tough materials and another pair for more delicate tasks.

Other important fly tying tools include bobbin threaders and bobbin holders, hackle pliers, tweezers, bodkin and dubbing needle.
