Fly Tying Materials

There is no doubt that fly fishing is the best type of fishing you can get into. It involves so many skills without being difficult and offers a lot of benefits to its practitioners. Another hobby that is connected to and sprung out of fly fishing is fly tying. In fact the hobby of fly tying is so popular that you will find many people that enjoy it on its own, without even being interested in fishing. Fly tying involves having lots of patience and being creative and it appeals to those that like to work with their hands.

For the fly fisherman there are many reasons and benefits to learn to tie your own flies. First of all it is relaxing. It is a wonderfully peaceful way to relax and pass the time. Tying your own flies is also one of the most gratifying and rewarding aspects of fly fishing. Nothing comes even close to the feeling you get when you catch a fish with a fly you’ve tied. Although initially expensive, you save a lot of money in the long run by making your own flies. This is because fly tying materials are very cheap.

Once you’ve made your mind up to get into fly tying (the sooner the better), you have two options available to you. You can buy a fly tying kit or you can buy all your materials separately. The advantage with fly tying kits is that they contain all the tools and materials you need to get started and are a good way to gauge whether fly tying is for you or not. The downside is that you get inferior tools and sparse materials.

If you’re really serious about fly tying then you need to buy good quality tools such as a vice, scissors, hackle pliers, bobbin, bodkin and other tools.

Once you have your fly tying tools you need to acquire fly tying materials. Everything that goes into making the body of the fly is regarded as fly tying material from the thread to the cement. The materials you can use are truly infinite and you are only limited by your imagination and it is this freedom to use any material that you can think of and find to make the fly that excites people.

Thread – Fly tying thread is available in a huge variety of colours and sizes. Popular sizes are 3/0 and 6/0. When you’re a beginner it is a good idea to start with 3/0 threads. This is because it is a heavier thread and therefore easier to work with and harder to snap. When you’ve had lots of practice and think you are capable, you should move onto 6/0 threads. Threads in this size are thinner and are a little more difficult to work with but they make your fly look very good.

Hackle – Hackle or feathers from a bird’s neck is used for both dry flies and wet flies. Dry fly hackle is taken from roosters that are specifically bred for the purpose. To make the best dry flies try to obtain long, stiff and shiny hackle. For flies that sink you need hackle that is soft, dull and absorbent.

Fur – Fur is used to make the body of a fly. The body is very important because if it is not enticing to a fish you will not get a bite. There are many materials that can be used for the body including fur, both real and fake. The fur of many animals such as rabbit, goat, beaver, badger, mole and others are ideal for the body of a fly.

The above is some of the main materials that are used for making a fly. Others include feathers and animal hair from moose, deer and elk for the wings and tails. Wires or beads to give the fly some weight and cements and glue to hold the thread in place and give it a gloss finish.
