Fly Tying Hooks

There is nothing like catching a fish with an artificial fly. The only way it could be better is if you made the fly with your own hands. Getting involved in fly tying is a must for those that want to take their level of expertise and enjoyment to the next level in the wonderful sport of fly fishing.

You can certainly buy ready-made flies and there is a huge range of fly patterns available on the market, but there is great fun to be had by tying your own flies as it allows you to be creative and engaged in every step of the process of catching a fish from the initial creation of the most suitable lure to the catching and releasing the fish. By learning to tie your own flies you will always have a constant supply of different flies and never run out, plus you save yourself a bit of money.

Before you even think about what material to make out of your flies, you need to have the right hook. Fly fishing hooks are very important because it is the foundation everything else is built on. There is a huge variety of fly hooks available on the market and you need to choose the correct one for you no matter if you’re a beginner or an expert.

You can buy fly fishing hooks in lots of different sizes and shapes and picking the correct one for the particular fly to be tied can seem like a very difficult task but in reality it is not so. You just need to remember a few basic principles and you will be fine. A dry-fly pattern will tend to have a smaller wire diameter and is much lighter for better flotation; on the other hand a wet-fly patterns and streamers have a larger wire diameter and are heavier and stronger.
